Two strong second places at Oulton Park have kept Paul Rivett firmly in title contention in the Renault UK Clio Cup.

The Tachosys-sponsored driver was on the pace all weekend in Cheshire and qualified second for the opening race.

Poleman James Dorlin made a great start to defend from Rivett and began to pull away. This meant the three-time champion decided to try and back up the chasing pack to help his WDE Motorsport team-mate Lee Pattison rise up the order. Although Pattison wasn’t able to gain any further places, Rivett was still able to hold off Max Coates.

And Rivett was second again in race two – thanks to a brilliant opportunistic move on Dorlin. On lap five of 15, Dorlin was attempting to pass leader Coates and Rivett spotted a chance to draw alongside out of Lodge and took the place across the line to complete a successful meeting.

“We’ve had two good solid results,” said Rivett. “The only issue was it was the three of us fighting for the championship that have been at the top in the races!

“The only ways you can pass here is when someone makes a mistake or they’re battling and you take advantage. I knew that was my opportunity to have a go [and pass Dorlin].”

Rivett remains third in the championship, just 12 points behind leader Dorlin.

The next rounds of the series take place at Croft on June 23/24.
